Hear some of the best jazz musicians in the country, meet one of America's premier songwriters, learn about the world of emerging indie bands and more on this music special airing on the stations of OPB on June 9 at 8pm. ART BEAT host Jeff Douglas has had his finger on the pulse of Oregon’s music scene since the 1960s and is your guide for an insightful and entertaining look at the music we make here.
Hear from: Rebecca Kilgore, one of the great living jazz singers; Kate Davis a young jazz bassist and singer who was helped by many established Oregon jazz players; Stolen Sweets, who bring fun and sweet harmonies to the swing music of the '20s & '30s; and Oregon's favorite party band, the now world-famous Pink Martini.
See seldom-seem footage of Mickey Newbury, the legendary songwriter who lived the last 30 years of his life in relative obscurity outside Springfield. Meet Cal Scott, member of the Trail Band and music composer for many PBS documentaries. Chris Kokesh, fiddle player for Misty River Band plays a song that tells the true story of her mother giving Chris her old wedding dress so she could sell it to buy a guitar to pursue her dream of being a musician.
