Program Description

One of the most beautiful and unusual lakes in the United States, Crater Lake is hidden high in Southern Oregon's Cascade Range. Shot in HD, CRATER LAKE: THE MIRROR OF HEAVEN captures the breathtaking magnificence of the lake and its surrounding area. Blending Native American spirituality with science and history, this program is a chance to witness Crater Lake's past and present while enjoying its natural splendor. CRATER LAKE: THE MIRROR OF HEAVEN is a production of Southern Oregon Public Television. CRATER LAKE: THE MIRROR OF HEAVEN presents a compelling account of the creation and discovery of the lake. Advanced animation and video clips depict the massive volcanic eruption that formed the lake more than 7,700 years ago. The film delves into the lake's prominence in Klamath and Modoc Native American history and culture, and the persistence of William Gladstone Steel to designate it as a National Park in 1902. Some of the unique aspects of the film include previously unpublished historical images of those who explored the region. The first photographer of Crater Lake, Peter Britt's photographs are shown in the film accompanied by his notes. Vintage images are combined with historically accurate reenactments, and narrations from personal diaries and newspaper reports.
