Program Description

THE OPEN ROAD: AMERICA LOOKS AT AGING examines the impending retirement of America's 77 million baby boomers and the staggering impact it will have on American society. It delves deep into the myriad of choices these new "retirees" will face. This one-hour film explores the lives and work of dynamic and thoughtful individuals, revealing the obstacles and opportunities they face as they confront the "third stage" of life. Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Nina Gilden Seavey traveled the country to collect stories from people who have shaped and continue to shape their own answer to the question "What's next?" The characters featured in THE OPEN ROAD come from all walks of life: some simply revel in the freedom of jumping in their RV and hitting the highway, while others are anxious about defining a new sense of purpose in society. The program profiles people who have found themselves unprepared for the financial hardships of retirement and are forced to return to work as well as those who volunteer in a variety of ways that help to bring focus and purpose to their "Golden Years." Aging experts offer insight on the issues that confront America as boomers - the most active, educated, and vital demographic group of retirees the country has ever seen - prepare to retire. THE OPEN ROAD: AMERICA LOOKS AT AGING is supported by The Atlantic Philanthropies and by The National Council on the Aging. It is a production of the Documentary Center at The George Washington University in association with Oregon Public Broadcasting.
